Volunteer

You can help a low-income North Iowa family buy their first home. Give one to forty hours a week to Habitat for Humanity North Central Iowa. You can help by constructing homes, mentoring a family, or using your writing, planning, computer, and administrative skills in the office, for fundraising, or special events.
Volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas:
- House construction:
- Locations:
- Two on 17th St. NE (near the Highland Golf course): both are new construction
- Twon on S. Tyler & 6th St SW: one new construction/ one rehab house that was moved from Mercy
- Volunteer Opportunities:
- We need volunteers to help with construction such as framing interior & exterior walls, putting up siding, installing insulation, painting, installing flooring, installing windows, etc.
- All levels of experience are welcome!
- Other ways to help with our hosue building efforts besides construction are to supply food & water for our volunteers, clean up the job sites, etc.
- Timeframe:
- Volunteers can come for partial or full days
- Tuesdays-Fridays: typically 9:00am-5:00pm- however some evenings may be available
- Saturdays: 9:00am-4:00pm
- Call ahead to schedule a workday to make sure that adequate work and supervision is available. We are happy to schedule indiviuals and groups for volunteer days. See our events calendar for locations and times of our current build days.
- Age Requirements
- Volunteers must be 16 and above. Sixteen to eighteen years old volunteers must have a parent/guardian signature on the waiver of liability.
- ReStore: We have a great ne ReStore ("North Iowa's Home Improvement Discount Outlet") with a lot more space- which means we also have more needs for volunteer help!
- Volunteer Opportunies:
- Help to greet customers, clean, prepare, and price donations for the sales floor, pick up donations, do small repair on donated items, test appliances, etc.
- Timeframe:
- We would like volunteerss to sign up for 4 hour shifts, though shorter timeframes are also available
- Shifts are during store hours: Tuesday-Fridays: 8:30am-5:30pm / Saturdays: 9:00am-4:00pm
- Flood Salvage: Habitat for Humanity will soon be salvaging again from the houses on the Mason City Flood Buyout Program. The houses that we are targeting are in very good share (not moldy!) and have wonderful items to remove that are otherwise slated for the landfill-kitchen cabinets, doors, windows, vanities, light fixtures, bathtubs, toilets, flooring, water heaters, furnaces, etc.
- Volunteer Opportunities:
- Help to deconstuct houses that are scheduled for demolition. REmove items from the houses, load into trucks, and unload at the ReStore
- Help to provide food and water for the volunteers.
- Timeframe:
- From August to December there will be designated days for the deconstuction (approximately 3-4 days per month). Please call the Habitat office (641-424-8978) or ReStore (641-423-1688) to add your name to our notification list.
- Age Requirement
- Volunteers must be 18 and above.
